HB&P EMPLOYEES SHOW OFF THEIR GREEN THUMBS FOR VOLUNTEER DAY

On Friday, May 6, 2011, HB&P Partners sent eleven volunteers to lend a helping hand at the American Horticulture Society in Alexandria, Virginia. This was HB&P’s way of giving back to the community during Spring For Alexandria and Volunteer Alexandria.

Green Thumb Volunteer Day

When the HB&P team arrived at the American Horticulture Society they were warmly greeted by volunteer coordinator Jane Underwood, for a brief orientation and a tour of the beautiful property. HB&P volunteers were tasked with getting the large garden beds ready for the azaleas.

The HB&P team rolled up their sleeves and went to work: clearing weeds, rocks, and debris, making sure the beds were ready to be mulched. The HB&P team spread mulch throughout the garden beds and paths completing the transformation of the garden beds to azalea beds.

“It was a great opportunity to learn about the plants while we worked” said Marco Fernandes, accountant at HB&P. “There was plenty of work for our team to share.  It felt good to lend a hand to an organization like this,” concluded Marco.

AHS’s vision is making America a nation of gardeners, a land of gardens. “It’s amazing the amount of time and sweat it takes to maintain such an incredible organization,” commented HB&P accountant Katherine Polhamus. “I’m happy that we were able to come in and make a difference in their volunteer program. This was a great team-building experience and shared our firm’s commitment to the needs of the community.  Also, it was fun to spend the afternoon with my co-workers,” concluded Katherine.

The American Horticultural Society is one of the oldest national gardening organizations in the country. Since 1922, It has been a trusted source of high quality gardening and horticultural information. Today, their mission blends education, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship with the art and science of horticulture.
AHS, as it is known today, is the result of combining three different horticultural groups, the (original) American Horticultural Society, the National Horticultural Society, and the American Horticultural Council. Each of these organizations was formed with a different intention, but in the interest of improving horticulture in America as both a science and an art form, the groups merged over the years. The all-important concept of promoting and encouraging research and education in horticulture (in all of its branches) is the continued aim of the Society.
