Join us at UB for lunch, where two of the most impactful nonprofit leaders in the area will speak about their experiences! Comfort Cases founder Rob Scheer and Global Impact President and Executive Director Scott Jackson will each give a 45-minute presentation that offers their insight and knowledge into being leaders in the nonprofit sector.
Put Hope Into Action
When something breaks, you can fix it; when something shatters, you must rebuild it. Our foster care system is in need of complete reform in order for children in care to have a more humane experience. Rob Scheer knows that the first step is for our community to realize there is a problem. There are far too many people who have little to no knowledge of the struggles children in foster care face. These children are truly invisible in our society. Not only must we raise awareness of their plight, but we must come together to alleviate their suffering. We must ensure that the basic needs of children are being met as they enter into care. Despite the frightening and chaotic transition they are experiencing, these children deserve to have a sense of dignity as they are moved to another home. We must also realize that we are simply graduating foster children from the foster system to the prison system. We are not providing these children with the educational and life skills required to launch a successful future. Scheer inspires us to realize the responsibility that each and every one of us holds to take care of these children and ensure that they have an equal opportunity for success in adulthood.

The Global Development Goals and the Charity Within
Mr. Jackson was inspired by the United Nation’s 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development to encourage others to make the connection between their own personal struggles and the larger cultural and social issues of people worldwide and then find “the charity within.” His call to action is outlined through the remarkable mission and the work of well-known charitable organizations working on the front lines to achieve these 17 goals—whether it’s to eliminate poverty, bring health care to those in need, aid refugees in war-torn countries, or empower and educate women. Scott Jackson is the author of Take Me with You, an inspiring narrative of one man’s life story with practical instruction for getting people involved, either in important small ways or making a larger commitment to achieve justice and an ecologically sustainable world.

About the Speakers
Rob Scheer, Comfort Cases
Rob Scheer is the father of four children, all of whom he and his husband Reece adopted from foster care. A former teen in foster care himself, Rob recognized a troubling yet consistent trend: like so many in the foster care system, his own children came to his home carrying what few possessions they had in black trash bags. He immediately connected the trash bags with the instability, lack of self-worth, and fear that nearly 437,500 kids in foster care experience during this uncertain time in their lives. It is a time of great upheaval and instability, and their first foster home placement is unlikely to be their last. Many youth in foster care will be moved from home to home multiple times, carrying their life’s treasures in a trash bag.
Armed with the conviction that all children should be provided with everyday essentials and the comfort of a few things to call their own, Rob and Reece started Comfort Cases in 2013. This simple but large step began a journey to improve the lives of foster children throughout the greater DC region.
Subsequent news coverage about the Scheer family and the vision for helping youth in care has resulted in global interest in Comfort Cases. Comfort Cases has been given exciting exposure with interviews on The Ellen Show, a viral video viewed by over 100 million from Upworthy, and segments dedicated to the cause on The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and CNN. The organization has shipped the cases to 49 states and DC and Puerto Rico.
The dream is for every youth to receive a Comfort Case upon entering foster care and for no child to have to experience the indignity of carrying a trash bag ever again. The organization is continuing to expand its reach and will continue to grow with Rob’s passion and determination. Comfort Cases looks forward to the day when the organization can utilize local partnerships to reach every youth entering foster care in communities throughout the United States.
In addition to his work as the Founder of Comfort Cases, Rob has over 25 years of leadership experience in the financial industry. Rob is also a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He lives in Maryland with his husband Reece and their four children.
