After the overindulgence of Thanksgiving and the Black Friday frenzy of consumerism that follows, turning our focus to how we can help others feels especially rewarding. November 27, 2018, marks the celebration of Giving Tuesday, a relatively new but widely enjoyed annual event. As a committed partner of the non-profit community, HBP invites all of our friends and clients to join us in making a difference this year.
Unlike Christmas, Hanukah, and most other familiar holidays, Giving Tuesday doesn’t call for a particular decoration theme or traditional menu. Instead, it’s an opportunity to express your own style as you help others in a way that’s right for you. Charitable donations are one option, but thousands of volunteers also contribute their time and effort to support all kinds of causes in their own communities and around the globe.
Sometimes the challenges seem too big to overcome. What chance does one person have against issues like hunger, environmental destruction, or animal welfare? Those problems are huge, it’s true, but when individuals and small groups all do what they can, it’s amazing what can happen. That’s one of the rewarding things about Giving Tuesday; with so many people approaching giving together, meeting even the biggest goals becomes not just theoretically possible, but demonstrably achievable.
If you’d like to make a difference this year but aren’t sure where to start, the Giving Tuesday website can help you find charitable organizations of all types located in every state in the U.S. The site also has suggestions for getting involved in ways you might not have thought of. And if you’re part of an organization that wants to make a difference as a group, the site allows you to sign up to become a registered participant.
Of course, philanthropy doesn’t have to follow an assigned calendar. If you can’t donate or volunteer a few hours on Giving Tuesday, it’s still a great time to think about what’s most important to you and how you can contribute to causes that matter to you. Are you ready to commit to a regular program of giving or service? Establish a giving clause in your estate plan?
Count on our professionals to help you make the most of your giving and ensure you maximize any tax benefits that accompany your gift. But that warm feeling you get by knowing you’re making the world a better place? That’s yours to keep, with no professional assistance needed.
However you choose to make a difference, HBP is here to support you and the entire nonprofit community. We are proud to participate in many philanthropic efforts throughout the year, including our free, monthly events focused on helping nonprofits grow their organization and effectively pursue their mission. Please join us at our next Nonprofit Bites sessions on November 29, 2018, in Old Town Alexandria or December 5, 2018, in Baltimore.
